My mom started about 31yrs ago to be specific watching me tear around. By the time I was in school... it moved to watching some of my friends too. Now... she's watching some of my friend's kids...
They are all right around the same area/community and it has been a tremendous convenience for the parents of the kids she watches. there is no "licensed" day care in the village limits. She actually has to turn down about 2-3 parents every year because she is trying to keep it limited to people we've known for years. (though they are moving to a bigger home, so this may change by her seeking a license).

I think the most likely person who turned her in was someone else in the neighborhood who was actually charging people for watching their kids and felt she was being undercut by the other person not charging.
It also most likely that the person who is doing the watching doesn't have the licenses or certifications to do it. The neighbor across the street that watched my sister and I as kids every year had to get re-certified in CPR, first aid, and could have possibly surprise inspections. She had to make sure that in the basement that there was a window for egress in case of a fire and there were children in the basement. She had to file taxes and all that legal stuff.
So it is more likely that this person didn't have any licenses or certifications (like it stated in the article). So if you really want to help your friends out, take the few days it takes to get the certifications and have them chip in for the license then you can do whatever you want. Charge them a penny day (like colonial penn life insurance). I don't care.
But I'll bet that had one of the children she was watching choked to death on something or needed CPR and she couldn't provide the help she needed to in time, that that "friend" would be sueing her in a heartbeat.
OK, not directly related to this thead (could go in the parenting sucks, or child progress thead....but here goes)....
Apparently when the bus stopped yesterday to let off my kids (and about 6 others), 2 or 3 of the kids start running around in one of the yards after the bus leaves.
Just kids burning off some energy after sitting at a desk all day - best as any of the parents can tell they are kinda playing tag, kinda just screwing around.
Crazy Old Man (COM) comes outta the house and yells at them to get off his lawn, the kids apparently don't get off the lawn fast enough so COM says he is gonna call the cops.
The kids laugh and say something like "dude, we are only on the grass"; then COM says to get the hell off the yard and he goes and gets into his car. Kids start to head up the street and COM is now following/chasing them up the road; so they ditch it into the yard of the first kid of the bunch.
COM now stops his car and yells at the kids, and the Mom comes out to see what is going on. COM says those kids are running on my yard, Mom says so what, COM says he is going to call the cops....Mom says call'em.
COM apparently calls the cops, they show up and when talking to COM he goes ballistic and starts swearing at the kids and at the cops. They call for backup as COM has a history of calling complaints and becoming abusive. 2 or 3 more PoPo cars roll up and COM is told to go home and that he is to stay away from the kids and that he cannot talk to them.
Also, after a couple of parents called the school transportation director last night - the bus stop was moved the morning across the street & 2 houses down.
I'm thinking it is someone like that COM who called in the lady watching the neighbors kids.
I don't post very often, but when I do it is meaningless
Stay thirsty, my friends!

While the school district does not allow elementary school or Maple Avenue students to ride bikes to school, that could change in the coming weeks, Superintendent Janice White said. The Board of Education could vote to amend the policy on Oct. 13, when it is scheduled to discuss a recommendation from a district-formed committee.

My mom used to have a daycare in our house when I was born. When I got to high school someone turned her in and she had to go out and get licensed to continue. The licensed comes with all kinds of rules and regulations blah blah blah.
This lady isn't charging so I don't see the problem.
