OH they have not come down in price at retailers. It's just Monster feels you should just pay $70 for a 6' cable. That's just insane. A/V cables are just a huge racket. There was an article out there that I read about a guy who was going to give someone a $1 million if they could tell the difference between a cheap cable and this one Anjou cable that was like $7,000. So far I think the guy still has his million bucks.
There's really no difference, other than maybe that some have the gold plated connections and some don't. That's simply because gold is a better conductor than steel is.
I have some HDMI cables with gold plated connectors running from my cable box to my TV, and from my PS3 to my TV. Got them for a screamin deal thru the guy I bought my TV from at ABC Warehouse. They're 4 foot cables, and cost me like $80 total, which is right about half of normal price. Dude hooked me up since I bought my TV thru him and he made a nice commission off it.
I remember in class one day we did an experiment, and the monster cables had a 3-4% increase in bandwidth, but for video signals visible to the naked eye, there will be NO difference.
One important thing is to make sure to get the shortest cable that'll get the job done, as the signal DOES break down with distance
Cables are serious business
