I see that stuff all the time at the shop in Ann Arbor I work at. People come in, "My exhaust is really loud, can you check it out?" Put the car on the lift, up in the air, BAM! Catalytic converter cut out. It's expensive to repair too. Parts are the bad part on it. It only goes an hour or so on labor, but parts are crazy expensive for a converter and the pipe it goes in, because 99% of the time, you have to replace a whole section of the exhaust. Most times you gotta replace an O2 sensor and the wire that runs to it as well.

One guy from a dealer near Detroit came in one day, we were talkin, he said his lot got hit one night, like 37 trucks got nailed in one night. Took the converters off all of em. It's easy on the 4 wheel drive trucks, you can slide right under them on your back, a battery powered sawzall, 2 cuts, and you're done. 30 seconds if you're good.

They need to, in addition to going after the people stealing and selling these, is go after the scrap metal places that are buying them from the criminals.

By law they are supposed to make a copy of your driver license but them scandalous bastards throw them crackheads a few dollars and send them on their way....

Exactly. You know this from being a cop, and I know this from being the guy who has to write it on the work order to tell the customer they have to drop hundreds of dollars on a repair because someone stole their ****.

Worst one was the one who tried to get their insurance to pay for it, had a bay tied up at our shop for 3 days before the insurance claims adjuster showed up.

Heard about it, never saw it personally. That's dangerous to try and steal those. I don't work in a bodyshop, but am trained to do so, and know how dangerous those things are to work with.

This guy last night broke out a car window with the intention of popping the hood so he could steal the catalytic converter and sell it to a scrap yard for crack. The owner of the car came out of his house and smoked him.....The crack heads are stealing catalytic converters like crazy because they get big money for the copper....

FYI - I believe they want the platinum in them, not copper.
