This year I decided to finally join a league because I recognized that the Lions are terrible and wanted a reason to be interested in football games (other than watching the Lions circus act) during the second half of the season.
This is my first year of playing Fantasy Football and I had less than a day to prepare. In fact, I think I spent two hours total making my list because I found out that I could join this league the day before the draft. It's a 10 team league. I drafted #6 overall.
QB
Matt Hasselbeck
Trent Green
Mike Vick
RB
Ronnie Brown
Clinton Portis
Frank Gore
Joseph Addai
LenDale White
WR
Larry Fitzgerald
Roy Williams
Eddie Kennison
Laveranues Coles
TE
Tony Gonzalez
Jason Witten
Kicker
Josh Brown
Defense
Tampa Bay
Also tell me what you think of these specific decisions. These are the ones that I question the most.
- I drafted Ronnie Brown #6 overall when Stephen Jackson, Lamont Jordan, and Cadillac Williams were on the board.
- I drafted (the injured) Clinton Portis in the second round when Steve Smith was still available.
- I think I reached to far for Roy Williams when Hines Ward and Joey Galloway were still available (although I needed some reason to watch my crappy Lions while they are getting their asses kicked).

I like your team overall, I would have taken Jackson over Brown, but its a toss up. I personally WOULD have taken Portis in the 2nd round also (He went in the 1st round in my draft).
I think Williams will be a solid pick, the way I see it he has the most upside of the three you named. I also like Hasselbeck...
You should have a good season and if Portis pans out it could be much better.
jackson will have a breakout year ..hes hard to bring down ..hes gonna give our defense alot to handle

What are your opinions of my recievers? Am I living too dangerously there?
Since this was my first draft, I had no idea what to do once I got in the second half. Well...it was a combo of not knowing what to do and also being a bit buzzed. Should've never got sucked into drinking before everyone got there.
After the first six rounds and addressing my starting lineup, I took the best players available. That meant taking too many QBs. I thought that by taking the best player available that I could later make trades to fill needs. Unfortunatly I learned that QBs don't have a lot of trade value unless they are one of the very top QBs. So while I thought Vick was a steal late in the draft, I should've grabbed WR Jones (who was also available and a steal) from the Jags to fill my need. Actually in hindsight, if I were to do it again, I would've gone much later before even finding a back-up QB.
In your opinions, what is the value of a back-up QB as trade bait? Have you found them to come in handy later in the season when there's injuries?
There are always going to be a couple spots on your roster that are like a revolving door. Your 3rd qb spot is perfect for it. Throughout the season either through injury, bye weeks or some other event, unknown players and backups will emerge as viable starters and sleepers. You will most likely just end up cutting one of these guys, most likely Vick. Example, on your kickers bye week. Or, in the 1st couple weeks if some guy on waivers starts out like gangbusters, there will be a mad rush to get him.
Tip- For some reason, some people just cant figure out that you can make a waiver wish list. If you only have 1 player you want to cut, but arent sure if youre going to get your man off waivers, put in for a couple different guys but always put the sAMe guy in the drop spot. I recently learned that a few guys in my league didnt know that.

Thanks for the tips. I'm already considering the waiver wires and I'm regretting my pick of Vick more and more. I really didn't realize how tight the roster spots would be.Originally Posted by keif_dawg
Do you really think cutting Vick makes more sense than cutting White (my 5th RB)? So will most people find competent QBs better than Vick off the waiver wire?
Nice draft without much time...I would have taken Jackson over Brown, but in the end, I think thier numbers will be pretty close, so not bad there. Portis over Smith is then one that I may have switched due to the injury and Duckett around. This would have left you with possibly Smith and Fitz, which are pretty mush 2 of the top 5. You could run with Brown and Gore until your other backs grab the number one spot.
But overall, very solid and you might be able to trade a QB or TE after the first couple weeks. Vick and Witten could be studs this year, your set up nicely with trade bait.

I think you should stay where you are at. Droping someone the calibur of Vick is a mistake, he could have a great start and depending on the other teams in your league, you could trade him off to help yourself. Wait a few weeks to see where things pan out.Originally Posted by OneBadMutha

Hey, does State not get off to a great start each year? Like I said he is a gamble but worth your last roster spot for a few weeks.Originally Posted by cmuspmed

That being said, if this team is the same team he references in another post, Ernest Wilford is on the waiver wire. I personally think picking up Wilford and dropping Vick is a better option than keeping Vick in the hopes of getting tradeable value out of him. Besides with Hasselbeck and Green, he has no use for Vick on his roster.
