baseball Toby Harrah, the Tigers' Minor League Hitting Coordinator, to help Detroit for the season

Toby Harrah joined the Detroit Tigers in Texas during their series against the Rangers and will work with the team's hitters for the remainder of the season, a Tigers spokesman confirmed Wednesday night.

Harrah is the team's minor league hitting coordinator but will work with hitting coach Lloyd McClendon for the rest of the season.

Harrah has been the hitting coordinator for the franchise for nine years and generally travels to work with players throughout the team's minor-league system.

The Tigers entered their game Wednesday night against the Texas Rangers fifth in the American League in batting average, sixth in runs scored and eighth in slugging percentage. Delmon Young, Jhonny Peralta, Brennan Boesch and Alex Avila are among several Tigers hitters who have struggled this season.

Wow, this is essentially like firing McClendon without firing him. There must be some kind of strange power struggle going on behind the scenes.

Leyland has way too many of his "boys" on this coaching staff. That's been a problem for a while now.

Isn't that to be expected? Don't all managers try to get their boys on the staff, if available.

What else should he do, hire guys he has no working relationship with?

OT: But Rich Rodriguez did that with Scott Shaefer and Greg Robinson. RR had never coached a down with those two prior to Michigan, and we see how it worked out.
