Jimmy Howard re-injures groin, team hoping Ty Conklin isn't claimed on re-entry waivers

Howard re-injured his groin.

This season is over. Doesn't seem like they are ever going to be fully healthy.

Goalie Jimmy Howard's groin is acting up again; the same injury caused him to miss eight games in February. Howard won't play Wednesday night in New York against the Rangers.

Ty Conklin has been recalled from Grand Rapids and will start if he isn't claimed by any other team before noon Wednesday. If Conklin is clamed, Jordan Pearce would start for the Wings.

Joey MacDonald, who has a sore back, is unavailable to play.

"Jimmy Bedard is starting in New York," said coach Mike Babcock, trying to inject humor into the situation. Bedard is the Wings' goaltending coach.

No, it won't be Bedard. But it won't be Howard, either, as Babcock tried to be optimistic.

"I don't think it's anything major," said Babcock, indicating Howard began feeling tightness after Monday's 5-3 loss to Washington. "There was tightness and they're (trainers) trying to be cautious."

Conklin was 3-5-0 with a 3.40 goals-against average and .878 save percentage with the Wings before being demoted to Grand Rapids when MacDonald was brought up and outplayed Conklin in February when Howard was hurt.

In 12 games with the Griffins, Conklin is 8-4-0 with .915 save percentage and 2.40 GAA.

The Wings also have signed forward Riley Sheahan, a first-round pick in 2010 out of Notre Dame, to a pro tryout. Sheahan will join the Griffins this week.

Detroit Red Wings goaltending coach Jim Bedard has seen more action in net lately than he or the team would like.

Bedard filled in at practice today for Jimmy Howard, who re-aggravated his groin and won't accompany the team to New York for Wednesday's game at the Rangers (7:30, NBC Sports Network).

“I don't think it's anything major, just some tightness,'' coach Mike Babcock said. "We're obviously trying to be cautious.''

The Red Wings have recalled Ty Conklin on emergency basis from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He must first pass through re-entry waivers by noon Wednesday. If Conklin clears, he will join the team in New York and start the game.

If Conklin is claimed (the team would be responsible for only half the remaining portion of his salary, which is basically nothing at this point of the season), then Jordan Pearce will make his first NHL start.

"I feel like whether you're a backup or a starter you got to be ready to go,'' Pearce said. "I prepare the same as I have been all week.

“I'm excited either way. I'm just happy to be up here. I'll get focused and play the game. We're kind of desperate for a win right now.''

Also, captain Nicklas Lidstrom participated in his first full off-day practice since suffering a deep bone bruise in his ankle on Feb. 25. He has skated two days in a row.

"We're hopeful he might be ready Saturday (against Carolina),'' Babcock said. "I'm not certain. If not Saturday, then next week. Big E and Kuba (Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl) got to be coming eventually.''

Johan Franzen (back spasms) skated for about 15 minutes before practice today but said he did not feel good.

Goalie Joey MacDonald will see a specialist today to get a read on the MRI he had on Monday for his ailing back. MacDonald said he is encouraged that the MRI showed he does not have a bulging disc, something he underwent surgery for in 2006.

Why wouldn't ANY team in the NHL just claim Conklin? seems like an extremely cheap way to **** over another team

They would need to waive someone then or send someone down.

I didn't think there were roster size limits after the trade deadline?

that being said, based on how conklin played earlier in the season for the wings.....someone claiming him might be doing the wings a favor.

Roster limits go away when the playoffs start.

And as bad as he was, you would prefer Jordan Pearce?

I know that but even just after the trade deadline the roster rules change.

Expanded Rosters:
There's no 23-man limit to the roster after the trade deadline, so Florida is now free to exercise a more liberal strategy when filling up the bench. We may see the recall of forwards Jon Matsumoto andMichal Repik and defensemen Colby Robak and Nolan Yonkman. This as well as the return of Markstrom.

During the NHL regular season, a team may have a maximum of 23 players on the active roster, except for the period from December 19 to December 27, during which no player may be assigned to the AHL or ECHL, and after the NHL trade deadline.

After the NHL trade deadline, an NHL team is limited to four non-emergency callups from their minor league affiliates until their AHL or ECHL affiliate's season has ended (that is, callups from the AHL or ECHL who are not replacing injured players). Additions to the NHL roster, however, can come from players on the reserve list (see below) who leave collegiate, major junior, or European hockey clubs to sign entry-level contracts. 23-man Roster
There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club's playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline. Prior to the start of the season, each Club must submit to the NHL its "Opening Day Playing Roster" which shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Players on Injured Reserve do not count in the 23-man limit.

According to Article 16 Section 4, the 23-man roster limit is in place from the conclusion of the preseason until 12:01 am on the day of the NHL’s Trade Deadline. After that teams are allowed to have an unlimited active roster at the NHL level, provided players are signed to one of their 50 contract slots (note: players assigned back to their junior clubs do not count towards the 50).

I didn't realize that, they should bring someone up to play for Homer then. I'd like to see Chris Conner play on that 4th line again, he was pretty good earlier this year.

But they probably won't do that since the Griffins are in a playoff push, as if that means something.
