Jay Bilas got this right:
So, Wisconsin can play a pro baseball player at QB, but wrong for MSU to play injured cager and actor on senior night?http://bit.ly/AvKgGsSpartans coach Tom Izzo wanted to play Delvon Roe on Senior Day, but the rules won't allow it
EAST LANSING -- Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Friday he wanted retired forward Delvon Roe to play against Ohio State in a nostalgic return to the court on Senior Day, but the school has determined that NCAA eligibility rules will not allow for Roe to dress for the game.
Even a brief appearance in one final college game at Breslin Center would have been quite a moment for the 6-foot-8 Roe, who cited degenerative knee pain in announcing his retirement from basketball in September before the start of what would have been his senior season.
Roe, who attends home games and the occasional practice, has begun a professional acting career that appears to restrict him from playing because of amateurism rules, Izzo indicated. Ineligible players also cannot suit up for games.
"I think he deserved it," Izzo said of the idea that Roe would play March 4. "I’m sure I would have done it because I appreciate the kid, but we can’t do it."
The school still is expected to honor Roe on Senior Day, and Izzo said it would contact the NCAA next week to see what would be permissible.
Theres a hard life for every silver spoon. Theres a touch of gray for every shade of blue. That's the way that I see life. If there was nothing wrong there'd be nothing right.
I can see why this is a rule.
You could have players who get hurt mid-way through a season, go out and do Ford commercials or ads for local businesses, and come back to play. Even though this would just be an exhibition and he'd only be on the court a few seconds, I can see where this could cause all kinds of future problems for the NCAA.
I am sure they will honor and let him speak, let him kiss the floor and all that stuff. He should not be in the game though.
"the world will know soon enough if Millen in fact acted alone."
a boosters dream. Give a kid 50 grand to act in a commercial and have it be perfectly legal.
Other than that, let Roe play. He's deserved it with what he has been through.
Queme los Barcos!

Michigan State Seeking 'Special Pardon' To Allow Delvon Roe To Play On Senior Day
by Sean Yuille
READ MORE: Delvon Roe (F - Michigan St.), Tom Izzo (), Michigan St. Spartans
Had he not been forced to retire from basketball by knee problems, Delvon Roe would be getting ready to suit up for Michigan State one last time at home. The Spartans' Senior Day is on Sunday, and an outright Big Ten title will be on the line with Ohio State coming to East Lansing.
Since retiring, Roe has turned all of his focus to his acting career. However, Michigan State is hoping that on Sunday, for one final time, Roe will be able to suit up and make one last appearance as a player for the Spartans. The problem is that there are NCAA eligibility rulespreventing this from happening.
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Friday he wanted retired forward Delvon Roe to play against Ohio State in a nostalgic return to the court on Senior Day, but the school has determined that NCAA eligibility rules will not allow for Roe to dress for the game.According to Diamond Leung, Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis has been talking with the NCAA about getting Roe a "special pardon" that would allow him to dress. Also according to Leung, Roe still actually has a locker at Michigan State and Izzo wants to be able to briefly play him to give him a proper sendoff.
There's no telling what the NCAA will decide to do, but ESPN's Jay Bilas brought up a very good point about this situation:
This seems like another "classic NCAA" rule. Play professional baseball? No problem, you can come back and play football at a new school for one season. Retire from basketball because of knee issues and want to make one final appearance on what would have been your Senior Day? Sorry, that's an issue because you're an actor now.
In response to the ridiculousness of this rule, a #LetDelvonPlay movement has begun on Twitter. It remains to be seen if it will change anybody's mind at the NCAA or if the waiver will be granted, but the blowback at the NCAA certainly can't hurt. There is no harm in letting Roe make one final appearance with the Spartans, so let's hope that the NCAA wises up

Well if he "retired" he "retired" it's that simple. Would you really care if it were any other school that had this happen, or do you only care because it's MSU?
Understandable why a rule is in place. Would've been fun to see him get on the court for 30 seconds, but whatever.
Do I think something like this could be handled on a case-by-case basis? Yup. Do I trust the NCAA's judgement w/ that responsibility? Hell no.
