Looking to adopt a new dog- perhaps a German Shepherd or Boxer

Right. A mutt's a mutt. You have an idea what size it'll be and it's so young you can dictate most of its temperament.

yup, short haired dog that will be medium to large size. Add in the fact that its so young we get to rename it, all is a positive.

Fwiw, and I'm not trying to be a dick, but I can tell you without seeing that there is no way it's mixed with a Catahoula. Those dogs are so rare that any offspring (even mixed) they have would never make it to a rescue.Rescues like to put those titles on dogs to get attention. If I had a dollar for every "whippet" on petfinder that wasn't anything like a whippet I'd have a bunch of lottery tickets or ranch dressing.

You would be suprised, my former boss's wife wanted a Portuguese Water Dog and he said ok but he was adamant about getting a rescue, they ended up getting an 5 month old purebread at a shelter (she spent about 20 hours a week researching and scouring to find one) in tennessee, drove down and picked it up the next day.

I have also seen vizsla puppies at a shelter I worked with, family who had the mother didn't get her fixed because they didn't want to change her in any way and they were at a relative who also had a vizsla, they didn't want to deal with selling the pups so they dropped the whole litter (6) and all the papers for the mom and dad off.

Very rare without a doubt but there are occassions that it happens.

(FWIW my boss's wife is also working on getting another one via the same route. She found a 2 year old but they are looking for a younger one)

I was confusing a Catahoula with a Karelian, which is one of the rarest breeds on earth.

Regardless, Portuguese Water Dogs are way more common now that Barry O. got the kids one. And I see viszlas at the dog park from time to time. I've never seen a Catahoula.
