Later today I will give a speech on the state of sports journalism at Central Michigan University.

Image I am being honored as the school's 2008 journalist of the year and part of the deal is lunch and a speech from me about where we stand in my profession. I won't give you my entire speech, but what I do now is a lot different than what I did 27 years ago when I got into this business.

My entire focus was about newspapers. I covered events. I had deadlines I needed to meet and my name and face was in the newspaper the next day.

Now most of my work is electronic. There is the web log you are reading today. There is my radio work on 97.1 FM the Ticket and once a month appearances on Fox 2 during the Sunday round table.

I no longer recognize the business I fell in love when I was a student at CMU. If something happens at 9 o'clock we are talking about it 10 minutes later.

Yes, my Terry's Town column appears in the paper. But it is also online. That means you can pay to read me in print or get me for free here.

I do not know where we are headed. I just know I was on a roof top on opening day talking Tigers baseball during a pod cast with fellow Detroit News writers Rob Parker and Bob Wojnowski. And I hear there is more to come.

My business is evolving and turning and spinning into something I will not recognize five years from now. It is both scary and exciting as we talk this wild ride to the unknown.

I just hope to see you on the other side.
