OK. So it wasn't the Pulitzer. But when you are an old slug like me you take anything you can get.

I would like to officially accept the award as Real Detroit Magazine's best sports writer. Now I must get the tux out of moth balls (that is if it fits) so I can accept the statue at the official black tie awards ceremony at the Fox or one of the casinos.

I can see it now. I am standing in front of a crowd of 5,000 thanking the people who voted for me, the editors who re write my stories and even the people shaking their heads wondering how people could actually vote for a hack like me. And right in the middle of my speech they play that soft music we hear at the Academy Awards telling me to move along so they can give out the award for best sliders and soft serve ice cream.

Seriously, though I did win another award. Early next month I am driving to Mt. Pleasant for a luncheon to honor me as Central Michigan University's journalist of the year. During the luncheon they want me to talk about how the profession has changed since I graduated way back in 1981.

I simply need to look at my career. I began my career at the Grand Rapids Press and Detroit Free Press as a sports writer eager to see my byline in the newspaper. Today, I co-host a radio show on 97.1 FM the Ticket, write this web log, do pod casts, appear on Fox 2 and sometimes eagerly look for my byline in the newspaper.

How's that for change?

And speaking of change. There will be a pretty significant change in my career beginning next week. I will make the announcement here on Monday.
