In all of the pomp and circumstance of David Beckham’s arrival to the U.S. soccer scene there is one thing that has been completely lost. One thing that SHOULD rise above all but instead is ignored for far shallower exploits. That one thing is character.

I know, I know…What the %@#& is Mike talking about? But give me a few seconds here.

The truth is for all of Beckham’s greatness on the field and shall we say…intrigue off of it? The one thing the average sports fan should appreciate it what Beckham is really about and that is class.

Ah yes, I forgot. We are all now accepting of the idiocy of guys like Pacman Jones and Mike Vick. Sadly most fans could care less what type of guy their respective team just signed, instead only looking at the stat trends. With Beckham you gotta go deeper or else you risk missing the whole point…like the U.S. media has already done.

Great example, watch Beckham play…but look closer. Watch how he handles interviews. How he interacts with teammates, coaches, and yes...gasp, the fans. In a day and age where players can be seen flipping the bird to fans, blowing off interviews and flat out abusing coaches and teammates, Beckham is a lost jewel. An international icon the likes of Woods and Jordan who still approaches his craft on and off the field like a wide eyed rookie. Novel eh?

Look, he isn’t going to revolutionize the game. He won’t make U.S. soccer great or even good. Hell, the TV ratings will likely fade as well. I’m just telling you to pay attention to what truly matters. The guy embodies what most fans USED to care about. He destroys the image of the arrogant Englishman and is more beer league hacker than international superstar. I’m sure Tiger drives his Buick to each tourney right?

I’m not asking you to like soccer, not even gonna try. But this guy is worth a look if for nothing else but to catch a glimpse of what our athlete’s should be like. Now back to the police blotter, I think another NFL DB just shot someone.

Mike, I happened to be at the bar last night and caught the last 20 minutes of the game and it made me sick. I couldn't even hear the audio, but I could just tell how sensational the whole event was. They had the whole "Beckham Cam", the neverending shots of his wife in the suite with Eva Longoria (don't get me wrong, they're hot, but still), the constant camera shots of him stretching and all this for a whole 16 MINUTES of soccer that he played!

Not only that, but he didn't do a damn thing. Sure, he made one nice pass, but his corner kick at the end of the game was week as hell and I saw him bitching at the ref about something.

And let's not forget about how he was clapping at the fans giving the thumbs up after the game. He didn't do anything. Why is he clapping?

I don't know, man. I understand that it's a big deal that he's here playing soccer and all, but I just thought it was over the top last night.

I don't care if he's the greatest person in the world. I just don't. I'm sure there are very personable, friendly Cricket players in New Zealand, but that doesn't make me care about Cricket. I understand what you're saying Mike, but him being fan-friendly doesn't make me interested in his sport.

Well, if he is as you say, Mike, then that's fine. I like to see pro athletes act more like that. Set an example for the young people. On the other side, though, all I've heard about his wife, is that she's in it for the fame and fortune and that's it. All she cares about is money and rubbing elbows with the Hollywood high and mighty. True? I don't know, that's what I heard on tv last week. There's not a camera she doesn't like.

Beckham presents himself well. He seems candid, humble and classy. The guy drove himself to the game, I was shocked to see that. Those qualities make it easy for me to cheer the guy instead of becoming put off by all the media hoopla.

The soccer game was incredible because of all the legit buzz. A red carpet? For a soccer game? To my knowledge they don't even have a red carpet to the super bowl. Throwing that welcome party the same day as the game was a great idea. I wouldn't be surprised to see other big sporting events follow suit.

At least for right now the MLS and LA Galaxy in particular have my attention.
