Image Well it had to happen.

I had to eventually get on here and give my thoughts on both in state cagers as we head towards the meat of the big Ten slate. Problem is, neither of them inspire me to write much.

Newsflash, they both stink...at least right now.

Now before and of you pleather clad blue bellies or delusional Kool Aid drinking Spartans go bonkers, take a breathe and read on.

When I say they stink, I simply mean they are middle of the road teams that may or may not make the Big Dance and pose NO THREAT in the conference race.

When looking at Michigan it;s just more of the same. Where is the identity? Where is the improvement? Where are the signature wins? The answer? You guessed it.

Honestly, Michigan has done nothing to impress me. The wins are over mostly mediocre foes and the losses have been blowouts. Losing to UCLA is one thing but by 40? You lose all cred.

The seniors have not stepped up and whether they will or not is a question more suited for Mrs. Cleo.

Guys like Harris and Sims looked to have peaked, while a guy like Lester is the enigma of the conference.

Could I see Michigan making the tourney? Yes. However, I could also see them losing all their games versus quality foes and being a bubblicious special on Selection Sunday as well.

As for the Spartans it's just as sorted. While MSU has beaten some solid teams, they have also laid a few eggs to nullify the fun.

Yes Spartans fans, losing by a million at Indiana is that bad. did I mention Iowa?

Clearly we could get into revisionist history and talk about "what if's" in regard to injury but I don't play that game. Even in full health this team isn't that good.

Image Neitzel has been good...against lousy teams that is. Sure the Texas game was nice but it will stand as sheer abberation until he makes a habit of doing it against the big boys. Where was he at Iowa? How about Indiana? You get the point.

The lack of depth is what will kill MSU in the end. While they have a bevy of bigs in numbers, they truly have few who can actually ball right now.

I feel better about MSU going dancing than Michigan...but not by much. It still comes back to getting signature wins. The clock is ticking since the last "Izzo" win and frankly I don't know if they will reach up and grab one this year. Go win at OSU and impress me. How about beating Wisky...anywhere?

In the end I don't see MSU as any threat to the conference crown either. Wisky and OSU are simply too good.

Final thoughts as I sit here in mid January? Michigan makes the tourney as one of the last five in and gets hammered in the dance. MSU makes it in as a low end at large, wins one and gets bounced.

The debate will rage for Wolverine fans, especially if they don't notch a big whale this week. Remember this, conferences like the Pac-10, MVC, and certainly the SEC are back and bid hunting. The Big Ten stinks and it will hurt them come selection time. Forget the record and look at the resume. If you haven;t beaten anyone you should be nervous...very nervous. Yes Tommy I'm talking to you.

I agree with you about Michigan,Mike...The seniors have been nothing but awful this year and im not holding my breath for this team to make the dance..With that said Mike,I am very optimistic about the future.I believe they are starting to get higher end basketball players..They have a solid foundation in the future with players like Sims,Udoh, and Baker..With Legion and Harris coming in,that could be the beginning of some nice runs..With all this said,it also comes down to Tommy making some changes as to letting someone else on his staff run the offense...He needs to do that or Michigan will always be an underachieving team with Tommy..

Right now UM is ranked around 55 or so in the RPI and MSU is 23. This bodes well for MSU because many of the teams they played are from mid-major confrences and will be competing for conference titles which should help maintain the RPI through this brutal stretch of a schedule.

My opinion of UM basketball is jaded but their pathetic schedule and lack of quality wins will leave them playing home games in late March. But from talking to some co-workers UM fans like the NIT because they get to see more live action at Cryshler arena!!

Good job on telling it like it is Mike. UM can't win against a non conference opponent more powerful than Delaware State, and MSU is not its usual self on the basketball court this year. Whether either of them make the NCAA, it doesn't matter because they'll both go home early.

Anytime I read or listen to the stuff Mike puts out there for public consumption, I truly wonder why he watches college sports at all...he's becoming Drew Sharp's white doppelganger

Now the fun starts at Columbus on Saturday! The keys to the game Saturday…keeping Mike Conley out of the lane and a solid game out of at least 2 of the 4 bigs. No doubt that Gray, Suton, Ibok and Naymick are going to all get shots at Oden…and at least two of those 4 have to play a good game. If Suton gets his outside jumper going that would be huge because it would drag Oden away from the basket, opening up the lane for Morgan, Walton and Neitzel to penetrate. Also I think it’s important to make Oden guard the pick and roll because Suton is going to get open jumpers off of that and they might be able to pick up a cheap foul or two from Oden hedging on the screen. Now Conley…from what I’ve seen of Ohio State, this kid (that MSU barely missed getting) is Dee Brown quick and gets into the lane with ease which then creates dunks for Oden and 3’s for Lewis, Butler and Cook. However he has no jumper. Walton and Neitzel have to have pressure on the ball but at the same time they MUST keep him out of the lane!

On offense…like I said earlier they have to make Oden guard the pick and roll. Unfortunately Naymick and Ibok playing a lot of minutes is bad offensively for the Spartans because of their lack of offensive skill. Oden will no doubt guard them when they are in and thus just stand in the lane making no effort to guard either of them. I wouldn’t mind seeing a line-up where Morgan is used at the 4 and Gray/Suton at the 5. But basically they have to be hitting from the outside to stay in this game or run the Spartan break and beat Oden down the floor before he can set up camp in the defensive lane.

Hope I got ya’ll fired up for Saturday now. I’ve already told my neighbors that MSU is playing the #5 team in the nation Saturday night so it could get loud for about 2.5 hours. GO GREEN!!!!!
