As I stood and cheered for what seemed to be forever on Tuesday night while Darren Pang introduced my childhood hero, it hit me.  This moment was likely the pinnacle of my life as a sports fan.  I’m not one of these guys that can’t separate the world of sports from reality.  I understand entirely that it’s a game; that it’s entertainment; that it hardly registers on the grand scale of life.  I get that.

But I also have never been ashamed of the fact that sports played a humongous role in shaping who I am as a person.  Sports were a way for me, like most other young boys, to bond with my father and my grandfathers.  They were a way for me to learn lessons on what it meant to be dependable, loyal, competitive, gracious, humble and courageous.  I view sports as a major tool that was given to me by the people in my life as a way to build character.  I learned what earns my respect from people not only on the playing field but off, just like I learned how to garner the respect of others.  The things I gained from playing and following sports transcended just the games themselves.  Those things helped shaped the person I am today and I would imagine many of you guys reading this would have similar stories.

ImageI had not been born yet when Sylvester Stallone created and unveiled the character that would ultimately define his career--Rocky. Over the course of several years, Rocky lived on through sequals; eventually fading out with the fifth--and in my opinion the worst--installment. Almost an entire decade would know nothing of Rocky, learning about him only through video rentals and movie marathons on television.

Growing up in the 1980's, I was introduced to the Rocky films at an early age. Afterall, Rocky III, IV and V were released during the 80's. I may have worked my way backwards though--starting with Rocky's cold-war battle with Drago the Russian ("if he dies, he dies!") and ending with the first movie ("yo Adrian...I did it!). No matter, I fell in love with those movies, but more importantly the character of Rocky.
