My email box was full of questions about March Madness from family, friends and a few readers. So, I figure it wouldn’t hurt to answer some burning questions in a Madness Mailbag. Here goes nothing.
First, have you ever won your bracket?
Yes, in 2003 I had Marquette (Dwyane Wade), Kansas (Kirk Hinrich, Nick Collison) and Syracuse (Carmelo Anthony) in the Final Four with ‘Cuse winning it all. I didn’t really know what I was doing, I just had an idea of who was really good an rode them to the title.
Who do you have in the Final Four?
West – Kansas
Midwest – Florida
East – Georgetown
South – Ohio State

Your 2006 Detroit Tigers were one of those teams that came out of nowhere and took the league by storm. They lead a string of recent underdog winners and one-year wonders in Major League Baseball make picking the World Series winner about as easy as it is to win your March Madness office pool.
Parity is the only way to define how a team that lost 119 game three years before can go straight to the World Series. Last year’s playoff run and other recent World Series winners like the Marlins (’97, ’03), Diamondbacks (’01), Angels (’02) and White Sox (’05) have become the new fad as dynasty streaks like the Braves run of 14 straight playoff appearances come to an end.
What the Tigers accomplished last year was fantastic, but the odds that they will duplicate that miracle season are against them.
First, here’s what made them so great: Four rookies not only met, but exceeded expectations. All of the veterans, including oft-injured Magglio Ordonez, stayed healthy. Their manager Jim Leyland gave a young ball club leadership and a personality. Their pitching was exceedingly better than the White Sox and Indians.

An NBA verison of the Randoms. Sorry for not writing in a while, I was in Florida last week and I’ve been sick this week. While being sick at home, I watched a lot of basketball (college and pro).
Here’s a basketball edition of Random Thoughts:
1 – We’ll start with the Michigan Wolverines, who are on the outside looking in again. I was at the MSU game in person and thought Tommy Amaker did a good job of getting his team ready to play. I thought the same thing Sunday against Ohio State. Amaker wasn’t the problem. Simms missing the dunk that would’ve tied it and Harris missing the front end of a 1-and-1 were the reasons they lost. The seniors choked on their day, that was the problem.
Don’t give up hope, Michigan fans. This team has a resume that is very similar to Illinois and everyone says their in. If Michigan can make a run in the Big Ten tournament, they have a chance of making it. The Big Ten is weak and nobody else needs to make a run like Michigan, they can take advantage of the fact that nobody has anything to play for really. OSU didn’t look like they care about a number one seed on Sunday did they?

I'll be leaving the sofa for Florida this week. I think it’s time for another installment from the recliner; it’s the Random Cough Potato Thoughts. Spring Training has arrived and I’m going to Florida this week so updates will be sure to come later in the week.
1 – I hate talking Lions, but I love football. I hate the Lions, but I love coming up with scenarios that ordinary organizations would consider, and probably do, and spell it out in front of Matt Millen’s face and watch as he goes the wrong way into the toilet.
The issue now is their defensive coordinator. They signed Rod Marinelli’s son-in-law to take over for Donnie Henderson, who has been a great coordinator everywhere but here. I didn’t like the move when it happened and I absolutely hate it now because now Ron Rivera is available.

Another installment from the recliner. A running segment I had on the old sportsinferno.com was the “Random Couch Potato Thoughts.” Well, guess what? I’m back, baby! If you don’t remember, I’ll be going through the top stories in sports and giving my opinion, with the occasional link.
Anyway, sit back in the recliner and pop open a cold brew; it’s time for some “Random Thoughts.”
1. I really wanted to start off with the Oden vs. Durant stuff, but everyone is talking about Wade Phillips being a mistake hire and I have to get to that first because this coaching search was failed from the start.
