ImageMany faithful Detroit Mercy fans tailgate before basketball games outside Calihan Hall. The cold does not prevent them from unloading tiny grills and crock pots to make burgers and chili.

The question is: Would they tailgate before a UDM football game in the fall?

Last week, UDM's vice president for enrollment, Michael Joseph, said the school wants to bring football to campus. The Titans would play in a 4,000-seat stadium with 100 non-scholarship players in an attempt to make UDM feel more like a traditional college campus on fall weekends.

ImageThere are a number of University of Detroit Titan fans on this website.

And out of respect for most of you I am not going to refer to your school as the Detroit Mercy.

A number of you cannot stand it and I do understand. But that is not my point.

My point is you want the best for your athletic program which continues to be an after thought on the Detroit sports scene.

We don't cover your program very well in the newspapers. We don't talk about the Titans much on radio and not enough people attend UD basketball games.

It is time for people to discover this basketball program.

And Saturday is the perfect day. The 14th-ranked Butler Bulldogs come to Calihan Hall for a 4 p.m. game against the Titans. If you've never been to Calihan this is the night to do it.

Terry Foster - Detroit News
DETROIT -- There was a time when University of Detroit basketball created a vibe and groove that rocked the city.

With Dick Vitale coaching -- and promoting -- Titans basketball games were the place to be and to be seen, and Calihan Hall was the real "Big House." The Titans were as big as it gets, with NBA talent on the roster and big-name opponents on the schedule.

Vitale, however, left to coach the Pistons in 1978, and the fire died in the Titans program at least 25 years ago.

Image Which is not to say the Titans haven't enjoyed success. In his 14th season, coach Perry Watson has guided the team to 10 winning seasons, three league titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT Final Four. Between 1997-98 and 2000-01, the Titans had four straight 20-victory seasons.

Yet, the Titans still play in relative obscurity.

Sports Inferno's T.Fos
The other day I ran into Lions running back Kevin Jones and his family downtown.
He was on crutches recovering from a season-ending foot injury. The news did not sound good at first. We heard that the foot might need nearly a year to heal which meant he would not play until the 2008 season. The foot may never be the same.
But Jones was optimistic that he'd return for training camp and resume his role as the Lions running game. I do hope he returns because Jones is a nice enough guy and he was motivated to play sports by going to youth camps put on by Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace.

Don't sing it, bring it
The thing I don't understand is why is our death so important to some people.

Thursday was a good day for the Sports Inferno and it was a good day for the station. The Sports Inferno finished No. 6 in the market in the 25-54 male demographic. Any time we finish in the top 10 that is great news. The puzzling thing is that we were number two in the market for men 25-54 in number of people listening. They just did not listen long enough and when you factor that in we placed sixth in the market.

But that's cool. I will take that.

WXYT - Home of the Tigers & Red Wings

It was also great for our station because the Tigers and Red Wings will remain with 1270 AM for at least the next three years. It is a win-win for the station and the teams because games will also be simulcast on Live 97.1 FM, which carries a stronger signal and hopefully everybody can listen to the next Tigers and Red Wings run. You will be able to listen to pre-game and post-game shows on our station along with the games.
