• They paid how much for him??????

The $250 Million Dollar kid. That is how much the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS ponied up for David Beckham and his physics defying corner kicks. But who are we kidding? The L.A. Galaxy are not going to pay a quarter of a billion dollars to a soccer player who is clearly in the twilight of his career just for his skills on the "pitch". This was a $250 million dollar investment in to the MLS.

By aqcuiring Beckham, the L.A. Galaxy has almost assured themselves not only a bevy of SportsCenter highlights, but also the attention of Beckham fans overseas and the very casual soccer fan here in the United States. But will this added attention hurt or help the MLS?

I believe that this will do nothing but help the MLS and the continued growth of soccer in the United States. David Beckham's name is a global brand, and him playing in L.A. is going to bring an influx of money to the MLS. At least one of his games are going to be broadcasted nationally, and advertisers who are not known for advertising in MLS games are going to want to hitch up to the wagon that is David Beckham.

Not only was this a great move by the MLS and the L.A. Galaxy, this was also a great move by David Beckham. He understands that the skill level of players in the MLS is on a much lower level as of those who play in the European leagues. He also understands that L.A. is a major media market and he'll be treated as the second coming of Pele' in a sport that is craving that one big name.

More kids are going to want "Bend it like Beckham". More advertisers are going to look at the MLS as viable product. More people are going to tune in to ESPN to see the Galaxy highlights from the night previous. More curious fans are going to tune in to a L.A. Galaxy game just to see what all this David Beckham hype is about. And in America, more is good.
